@SOUTH WEST TECHNICAL DIVING

So you have decided to be a CCR diver!! Great, but now the hard work of deciding which unit you want to buy begins.

Today the market has a lot to offer and there are quite a few rebreather options on the market. Hopefully we can give you some ideas of why the JJ-CCR is the right rebreather for you.

The first step is deciding what type of diving you will do and does it warrant the need for a rebreather! That’s fairly easy for us as the JJ rebreather is very versatile and will suit all styles of diving from warm water reef photography, to deep wreck diving and extended cave exploring.

Then you need to consider the actual purchase. For the new buyer, this process can be a bit overwhelming.

Some helpful tips:

Do as much research as possible.

Try a couple of demos/try dives.

Talk to your friends/get opinions. Find out what do they like versus what don’t they like and why.

In the end, keep an open mind. Realize that every diver who has bought a rebreather thinks that theirs is the best on the market. Follow the above tips and decide what features are most important to you.

FEATURES

Many rebreathers on the market are outfitted with a lot of bells and whistles that you’ll notice the JJ doesn’t come equipped with. The reason for this is simple, we believe that simple is best. Our philosophy of simplicity is designed to minimize the number of parts to give you only what you need to conduct any dive and no more.

Why don’t we believe in adding more features?

We feel that added complexity doesn’t add any value to the diver. Technology is great but what happens when it fails? And what happens when technology is sent to the market without being tested? Now the whole market is the testing platform. Minimizing the number of failure points, in our opinion, makes diving safer.

Test Data

One of the most important things when choosing a rebreather is to have evidence of its performance. Properly designed rebreathers will give good safety margins and make your diving comfortable and enjoyable. The only way to do that is to test. In Europe we have no choice as testing is mandatory and there is an EU standard known as EN14143. This standard details the test criteria for the testing and it is a pass or fail exam. It is illegal for any manufacturer to sell a rebreather without first obtaining the CE standard. It is also illegal for any professional instructor to use non CE equipment while running courses.

The two most important questions to ask are:

Does the rebreather you’re looking at have any test data?
Can I see the test data?
Remember properly designed and properly tested rebreathers are important for safety!

Do not take the manufacturer’s word for performance, ask to see the tests. If the rebreather has CE to EN14143 at least you know it has been thoroughly tested.

Training

GOOD AND THOROUGH TRAINING IS MOST IMPORTANT

JJ-CCR controls its instructor base very carefully. We monitor the progress of our instructors to maintain a very high standard of education. This process ensures you get the best possible start to CCR diving.

During the JJ training course you will get a very detailed education of how the rebreather works, how to look after it, and most importantly, you will learn skills to protect yourself in the event of a system failure. Remember, simple is best! Because we minimize on features you can minimize the skillset you need to keep yourself safe. From our experience three or four well taught skillsets are much more effective than ten half learned sets. Also the smaller number of skillsets needed maintains a much better memory of how to do the skill. Continued practice by you, the diver, is easier and more efficient.

It is our belief that it is better to educate the diver on how to properly identify failures and what the appropriate response is, than it is to rely on technology.

Training

We have a dedicated team of highly experienced engineers and instructors who can quickly resolve any problems you may encounter wherever you are in the world. There are currently 11 service centres worldwide plus the JJ factory itself that are available to help divers if they ever experience issues with their gear.

Who Else Dives a JJ-CCR?

Take a look at some of the world’s most experienced cave and deep technical divers. You’ll notice they dive the JJ-CCR.

Why? Because the JJ is a very reliable machine with minimum failure points and these divers understand Simplicity and Versatility.

Conclusion

The JJ-CCR Rebreather is not built by a group of engineers sitting behind a desk with a nice drawing program on a computer. It is built by divers for divers, whose purpose is getting to the bottom of the sea to explore a ship wreck, or to get inside of a cave, or simply to just go diving without making it more complicated than it needs to be.

Our philosophy of rebreather design is simple:

SIMPLE IS BEST!

THE LESS THERE IS, THE LESS THERE IS TO GO WRONG

THE MORE THERE IS, THE MORE THERE IS TO GO WRONG.
